In June 2005, a significant majority of Dutch people stated a clear ‘NO’ in the referendum on the European Constitution. As a result, the government asked the question: what does the Netherlands want from Europe? On the website Netherlandsineurope.nl Dutch people could make their opinions known.

Netherlandsineurope.nl was an online study developed by the independent research agency Anker Solutions (part of the BKB Group). The government intended to use the results of the study to get a general picture of the Dutch public’s expectations about the future of Europe and several current European issues.

In May 2006, Secretary of State Nicolai for European Affairs announced the results. The study was discussed in the Lower House in June and helped to define the government’s position leading up to the European summit later that month.
